I just wanted to let everyone know that this will be my last post. I thought that this would be a good thing for me, being able to write about my life, but its just like every other blog out there. Especially now that everytime I post its something bad.
I will still check out your journals and comment, but this is the end.
Happy New Year |

| Rita: Yellow skies, and a rainbow |
[Sep. 23rd, 2005|07:12 pm] |
A few minutes ago, I was sitting here watching some reports on CNN.com, and saw a yellow tinge kind of covering everything. After checking to make sure I wasn't tripping, I noticed it was coming from outside. I looked out the window, and the sun had broke through the clouds. Geoff and I ran down the stairs and looked outside.
The rain is now coming down in hard bursts, 30 seconds apart. There is a beautiful, complete rainbow off to the north east, perhaps giving us one nice image before the big rains. The gay guys were still going in and out at the clubs down the street. More power to 'em, I say. |

| Rita: Rain, Rain, Go Away |
[Sep. 23rd, 2005|06:36 pm] |
It has begun raining here, but just a sprinkle. Where we are staying is near the intersection of Houston's biggest gay club district. Two of the clubs, JR's and The Montrose Mining Company are open for business, and a brisk business it is. I have seen it over and over today, that the stores and business' that stayed open were packed.
We are just hanging out really. I have been playing World of Warcraft off and on today, among other games. Jenn and Allison are napping for what could be a long night. |

| Rita: Here she comes! |
[Sep. 23rd, 2005|03:48 pm] |
The wind has picked up quite a bit now. Ten miles per hour, with gusts up to twenty. There are thick bands of clouds over the city now, thick and grey-blue. We took the dogs out for a walk about twenty minutes ago, and sas swirling clouds, like the start of a tornado, but it quickly went away.
We took the cars a few blocks away a couple hours ago. On the way back the only things open were Baskin Robins, and a Liqueor store... and the Baskin Robins was doing brisk business! There were six or seven cars out front, and a line out the door. Unreal.
We are sitting around right now, watching the news. We are estimating that we will lose power after 10pm tonight. I will continue posting until I can't, and once the rain starts I will try to post on the hour. If I don't, then the power is out.
Good luck Houstonians. |

| Rita: At Geoff's house |
[Sep. 23rd, 2005|12:14 pm] |
Just got in about 30 minutes ago, and are unpacked here. The drive down Westheimer (Main St. Houston basiclly) was straight and narrow. There were very few cars driving around, much like a weekday night not noon on a Friday. We passed three gas stations that were open, but only one seemed to be pumping any gas whatsoever. All three stations had cops posted at them, the one with gas had three cop cars, with officers spread out throughout the pumps and cars keeping watch.
The wind is now blowing at a steady clip. Since about 10:30, when the high clouds started coming in, it has been steady with minor gusts. Only a few miles per hour I am sure. More later. |

| Rita: Last post from home. |
[Sep. 23rd, 2005|09:53 am] |
This will be my last post from home before we leave for Geoff and Allison's place. All our stuff is packed up and ready to go. Just got to wash the bod one last time, and do one last look around before we are out.
The forcast path puts Rita hitting to our east slightly, but that doesn't mean anything at this point. We are going to get it, no matter what at this point. Its time for me to hunker down with the family and see what happens.
More details later. |

| Rita: Glad I stayed |
[Sep. 22nd, 2005|06:09 pm] |
Holy crap. I am sooooo glad that we decided to stay. The traffic is not getting any better, a constant parking lot a hundred miles long. Just now they are showing traffic just starting to creep along on both I-10 and Interstate 59. Still, I can only imagine sitting in traffic in my big ass car with no air conditioning. There is no gas anywhere that I know of. Bottled water is gone.
We are going over to Geoff and Allison's place about 10am, and I will continue to update throughout the day tommorow, and into Saturday as long as I can.
Thanks to topknot for the cool icon. Check out catcorley for some camera phone pictures from the freeways. |

| Rita: Back from supply run |
[Sep. 22nd, 2005|02:51 pm] |
We are back from our supply run, with little success. The Walmart near our apartment, which was supposed to close at 5pm, was closed when we were down there at 1:30pm. We walked back home from there, and in our parking lot a Pizza Hut driver was there, and yelled, "Hey, wanna pie, Jack?" So we got two large pepporoni pizza's for ten bux. Made a nice lunch, and we have some more left for later should we need it.
We got in the car and headed over to HEB to see if we could get some sugar, and some more water if we could. HEB was stripped clean. They ran out of water just before we got there, so we couldn't get anymore. We picked up some crackers and cheese, apples, pears, a bottle of wine, and some other canned stuff we could find. The line to check out was all the way around the store. Thankfully people were kind for the most part. When we were leaving the store, there was an old man standing their with his cart right in front of me. With a kind voice, and a smile on my face I said, "Excuse me sir, but you are in the way. Would you mind moving out the door, or the the right a bit so I can get by?" He turned with an angry face, and it quickly left as he moved out of the way. We are not animals.
On our way home, we stopped by the bank to get some more cash, but the ATM's were out of service. Sucks.
We are staying in for the rest of the day, as we board up our windows, and get ready to leave for our friends house in the morning. More later. |

| Rita: We're gonna stay |
[Sep. 22nd, 2005|12:52 pm] |
We have decided to stay in Houston and see what happens. We are leaving in the morning to stay with our friend's Geoff and Aly down in the Montrose, and weather out the storm with them. I will leave my contact information in a friends only post soon. The mayor has not called for evacuations of non-flood plain Houston yet, so I feel confidant that we will be ok.
About to head to Walmart for last minute supplies. More later. |

| Rita: Up an about |
[Sep. 22nd, 2005|11:02 am] |
I actually slept after my last post this morning, and I feel much better today than yesterday. I haven't turned on the TV yet, so I expect that feeling to change for the worst soon.
Rita has taken a northerly turn, and is expected to hit just northeast of Galveston Bay according to the forcasted path. Jenn is still asleep (and I plan on letting her stay that way until she wakes), so still not sure what we are gonna do yet.
It's a beautiful day in Houston today, hot as normal, but very sunny and bright. It's also dead. No one is on Westheimer in front of my house, other than the occasional car. According to the news, Interstate 45 is a 100 mile parking lot. Bumper to bumper from outside of South Houston, up north to near Huntsville. This just gives me another reason to stay.
I am going to play a bit of World of Warcraft while I still can, and try to unwind a bit. More later. |

| Rita: Sleep waits... |
[Sep. 22nd, 2005|02:12 am] |
|
About to go try to sleep for the third time. Wish me luck. |

|
| Rita: Decisions, choices and paradoxes. |
[Sep. 21st, 2005|11:11 pm] |
We are trying to decide if we are gonna leave tonight. Every one of the evacuation routes are all lines of red taillights. Some people were stuck in traffic for hours tonight. A friend from work spent 6 hours going just over eleven miles in Interstate 45 before she got off the road to head back home.
Cell phones have stopped working almost completely. Store shelves are completely devoid of most non-perishables, and most other things too. Bottled water is completely non existant. The manager of the Walmart next to my apartment complex said there would be no additional shipments before Thursday at noon.
<20 minutes later>
Jenn and I discussed it some, and have decided to wait till the morning to see if we are gonna leave. For now I will go have a fitful nights sleep. Good night all, more updates tommorow.
If this is boring, let me know, but I was hoping to keep a record... :) |

| Rita: Mandantory Evacuations, Catagory 5 |
[Sep. 21st, 2005|05:30 pm] |
The mayor of Houston, Bill White, has called for mandantory evacuations of three 'zones' along the coast of Texas. Part of which includes the east side of Houston. I live on the west side of town, near Westhiemer and Hillcroft (for those that know the area) so we are not leaving yet. We haven't decided if we are gonna leave if they give the order for us.
Went to another grocery store, and got some more food and other items. I thought we would have enough water with 8 gallons, so I went ahead and picked up some canned juice, and soda to help stretch that water out.
Just saw that Rita has been upgraded to a catagory 5. Some people are calling this a 'historic' storm. Weird name for it. More later. |

| Rita: Work is closing, more supplies |
[Sep. 21st, 2005|02:57 pm] |
I was due to come into work today at 2:30, and showed up a bit early. Traffic down I-10 west was horrible, but not quite a traffic jam yet. When I got to work, our phone system was down, as they were taking the server off the floor. 45 minutes later, and the system is still down. My boss just announced that we are closing the offices in a few minutes.
When I leave here, I have to get some more supplies. We need more food, and D batteries. Gonna top off the gas tank too while I am at it. More later |

| Hurricane Rita, and preperations |
[Sep. 21st, 2005|12:42 pm] |
Just wanted to let everyone know that we plan on bugging out if the storm hits too close to home. We have friends that live near downtown that we are staying with. Houston is built on a swamp, so it floods easily. Since we live on the first floor, and our apartments are prone to flooding, we really have no choice. I will check in and let you know whats going on, but once the storm hits I doubt we will be able to communicate.
Went to the store this morning to pick up supplies, and found the shelves stripped of food. Both the local HEB and WalMart were both ransacked. Water is in short supply, as are any non-perishable food items. After Katrina, Jenn and I gave all our canned goods to the local relief agencies, and never restocked. We have very little in the way of non-perishable food stuffs now. We have our full allotment of water for us and the puppy though, so that is a positive step. I don't know what we are gonna do about food.
Houston is not New Orleans, so I doubt there will be flooding on that scale. Still, it is a bit scary. I have the next two days off, so that will let me prepare a bit better.
I wish all my Houston friends good luck, and ask all non-Houstonians to pray/meditate/send good thoughts for everyone here. I will check in later. |

| It's hotter than Satan's armpits |
[Sep. 3rd, 2005|02:13 pm] |
Holy sheep shit in the mornin'! It's bloody hot outside today. I am helping a friend move, and I am sweating more than a whore in church. It's at least 95 degrees out there, with 100% humidity. Ahhh, Houston in the summer.
More later... if I don't melt. |

| Star City Games |
[Aug. 31st, 2005|06:50 pm] |
Recently, Pete Hoefling the owner of StarCityGames.com put up a news post about a couple of jobs availble. I applied for the Magic: the Gathering Buyer, and spoke with Pete and his wife/business manager, Crystal today about the job.
I think the interview went great! Pete asked some good questions, and I think my answers were quick and sharp. We seem to be of the same mind over organization, and gaming conventions, both big parts of the job as required. There are a few things that I didn't have experience in (PSA grading and Wholesale buying), but none of them seem to be something that I couldn't learn quickly.
I won't hear anything till next week, but man would this be a good job to have. Maybe The Ferrett can give a good word. :) |

| Pirates are stupid |
[Aug. 31st, 2005|02:45 pm] |
I was over on Mini Nova today, needing to download WinRAR, which is a compression program like WinZip but better. I Rar'ed up some of my backup files when I reformatted my computer, and needed the program so I could get those files out. I bounced around on the site, and got a couple of dead trackers (link's basicly) before I finally got a decent download. It finishes quickly, and I go to run the program.
It was Rar'ed... Its like buying a safe, and the only copy of the combination is on the inside. Fuck. |

| Man... NOLA is fucked. |
[Aug. 31st, 2005|01:55 am] |
I have been so busy at work the last couple of days, that I haven't had a chance really to see pictures from New Orleans. After work tonight, I made it a point to watch CNN for a bit and catch up.
Holy shit.
I love NOLA. Its a cool town, with an equal amount of history and debauchery. I love the coffee, and food. The girls, the guys, the bars, and the clubs. They have the coolest cemetaries there, and the best culture in the USA, in my opinion. Now it is part of the Mississipi and that big lake. That huge hole in the Canal street levy is amazing, watching the water poor into the city. Three quarters of the roof of the Superdome... gone. You can fit the Houston Astrodome inside that thing and still have room! I am totally amazed by it all.
I had a customer in Lafayette, LA call into the help desk yesterday complaining that she couldn't access the internet. When I told her that there were going to be many problems for quite a while, she took offense, and demanded a refund because we couldn't offer her internet access DURING A FREAKING HURRICANE! I happily pointed out the section of the Terms of Serive that say, "Acts of God are not covered! Asswipe!" Wonder if her house got blown away?
To all those who have friends and family there (Jenn, lookin' at you babe), please know that I am sending good vibes and prayers to those that need them. Wish there was something else I could do... |
